HIGHEST AND LOWEST PROPERTY
TAX RATES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE (2025)
The average single-family property tax bill in New Hampshire was $8,174 in 2025, up $252 from 2024, a roughly 3.2% year-over-year increase according to ATTOM’s latest property tax analysis. Property tax rates vary substantially from one New Hampshire community to another, shaped by local budgets, school spending, county taxes, property values, and the size of each community’s taxable property base.
Which New Hampshire Towns Have the Highest Property Tax Bills in 2025?
The highest property tax rate in New Hampshire in 2025 was Charlestown, at $36.54 per $1,000 of assessed property value. Keene followed with a rate of $34.37, while Berlin had a rate of $33.60.
There is a significant difference in property tax rates between New Hampshire municipalities. However, a higher or lower tax rate does not necessarily mean homeowners will pay more or less in property taxes overall. A property’s annual tax bill depends on both its assessed value and the local tax rate. A lower tax rate also does not necessarily indicate lower taxes or fewer municipal services; communities with a larger taxable property base can sometimes fund local services with a lower rate.
Which New Hampshire Towns Have the Lowest Property Tax Bills in 2025?
Hart’s Location had one of the lowest total property tax rates in New Hampshire in 2025, at $2.62 per $1,000 of assessed value. Other communities with relatively low rates included Albany at $6.99, Bartlett at $6.02, Bridgewater at $6.35, and Tuftonboro at $6.40.
What Should Home Buyers Know About New Hampshire Property Taxes?
For home buyers, the tax rate alone doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s worth comparing a property’s assessed value, the town’s tax rate, and the resulting annual tax bill side by side when weighing different communities. Northern New Hampshire includes several communities with a more moderate property tax rate, including Lincoln, where the 2025 total tax rate was $12.66 per $1,000 of assessed value, and Conway.
Ultimately, property taxes depend on more than the rate alone. Home buyers should compare tax rates, assessed values, home prices, and estimated annual tax bills together to get a true sense of the overall cost of homeownership in different New Hampshire communities.
