Originally part of Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, also known as “JP,” is a distinct neighborhood known for having a culturally diverse population, green space, and an active art community. There are so many attractions in Jamaica Plain it’s no wonder it’s a popular place to live. Jamaica Plain is also home to the Arnold Arboretum, founded in 1827. It was designed in collaboration with famed park designer Frederick Law Olmsted. The Arnold Arboretum is a National Historic Landmark and one of the best preserved of Olmsted’s landscapes.
Each year Jamaica Plain hosts a weeklong celebration of the arts called Open Studios. Open Studios is a fun and unique way for the public to meet the artists, see where art work is created, explore the wealth of interesting neighborhoods in JP and purchase wonderful works of art.
Jamaica Plain is also home to many performance venues including The Midway which has presented a variety of acts since 1987. Another popular performance spot is The Footlight Club, which is America’s oldest community theatre, and has provided performances every year since 1877.
There is a large variety of places to eat in Jamaica Plain, including Indian, Caribbean, Korean, to Traditional American restaurants and everything in-between. Top rated Ten Tables offers seasonal menus built around local ingredients. Their produce and dairy deliveries arrive daily via Metro Pedal Power, a bike delivery service serving Boston and Cambridge neighborhoods. Since 1882, Doyle’s Cafe remains one of Boston’s favorite bars and family restaurants. Doyle’s was voted Boston’s Best Pub, and is also a historic landmark in Jamaica Plain.
Students in Jamaica Plain are served by Boston Public Schools which include Manning Elementary for grades K-5, and English High School.
