What Makes Gardner a Great City to Live in?
Gardner is often referred to as the “Chair City” for its history of furniture making. In fact, a popular roadside attraction is the 20 foot tall chair sitting in front of the Helen Mae Sauter School in Gardner, a symbol of their status as the “Furniture Capital of New England.” The original Heywood-Wakefield company began here in the 1800s and made the blond streamlined furniture seen in fashionable homes in the mid-20th century. Other quality furniture companies established in Gardner around this time include S. Bent, Collier-Keyworth, and Conant Ball. Gardner is still the place to go for buying furniture with several large outlets which offer more than 250 famous brand names at discount prices.
Gardner is a small city but it has a large state park: Dunn Pond State Park. Dunn Park has over 130 acres and features a pond, walking trails, swimming, fishing, picnicking, public programs, and play equipment. In the winter visitors can use the trails for cross country skiing. All activities offered by the park are accessible to people with disabilities. Gardner also has its own golf course, the high-rated Gardner Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole course available to the public.
The Theatre at the Mount (TAM), located at Mount Wachusett Community College, is the area’s premier regional theatre. For more than 30 years TAM has presented musicals and plays and also offers dinner theatre options and backstage tours.
There are several casual restaurants in Gardner and one of the most visited is the Gardner Ale House, which is a full-menu brewpub featuring fresh, bistro style food in an upscale setting.
